Where There Is Love, There Is No Darkness
Two people in Paris who had no reason to find each other. Seydou is a Senegalese delivery worker sending money home to a pregnant wife he barely sees. Albert is a grieving retired actor with nothing left to prove. Director Stevan Lee Mraovitch made Where There Is Love, There Is No Darkness for $230,000. It won 11 awards at festivals including the Soho International and the Arizona International Film Festival, where it took the Special Jury Award for Bridging Cultures. You will not see it coming.

Teenage Dirtbag
The cheerleader. The kid who gets shoved into lockers. They get paired together in creative writing class, which is the kind of setup that can go wrong fast. It doesn’t. Regina Crosby Haug’s film won Best Director and Best Picture at multiple festivals before Universal picked it up worldwide. Scott Michael Foster plays Thayer years before Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and carries every scene. Teenage Dirtbag has a cult following for good reason. It earns every bit of that.

Pilgrim
$5,000. A father. His 15-year-old daughter. Doug Purdy and his daughter Scout co-directed it together, which is also the story of the film: a father and daughter hiking the California coast after her mother’s death, trying to find something to say to each other. They shot at 5 a.m. and after 7 p.m. for two months to avoid the midday sun. Pilgrim premiered at Cinequest 2025 and screened at Dances with Films LA. Watch it with someone you’ve been meaning to call.

Imitation Girl
An alien lands in New Mexico and takes the shape of the face on the first magazine it finds. That face belongs to an adult film actress. Lauren Ashley Carter plays both. Director Natasha Kermani made this before Lucky put her on the genre map at Shudder. Imitation Girl had its European premiere as opening night of FrightFest 2017. Slower and stranger than the premise suggests, and deliberately so.

Josh Blue: Broccoli
This is not an inspirational special about overcoming adversity. It is just really funny. Josh Blue won Last Comic Standing in 2006 and placed third on America’s Got Talent fifteen years later. His cerebral palsy is not a footnote in his act. It is the engine. Broccoli goes further than his earlier work, covering grief, parenthood, and the mechanics of disability with the same directness and none of the self-pity. Put it on tonight.

Forbidden Love: The Unashamed Stories of Lesbian Lives

This came out in 1992. Before it was a debate. Nine women on camera talking about who they were, in a country that mostly pretended they didn’t exist. The film reconstructs the pulp novel covers that were, for many women in the 1950s and 60s, the only evidence they were not alone. Genie Award. GLAAD Media Award. The most successful film the National Film Board of Canada ever produced. Pride Month starts in four days.

Bitcoin: The End of Money as We Know It
Made in 2015. Before it got tribal. Before the crashes. Before anyone had to have an opinion about it at every dinner table. The film traces money from bartering societies through central banking and the 2008 crisis, then lands on Bitcoin as a question rather than an answer. Four international festival awards. Still the smartest hour you can spend before your next conversation about crypto.

Open: A Journey Through Love
40,000 miles. 100+ hours of interviews. The subject is ethical non-monogamy. The real subject is what people actually want from love and whether they’re honest about it. Dr. Christopher Ryan, whose book Sex at Dawn reshaped how the conversation about human pair-bonding is framed, appears throughout alongside dozens of people navigating open relationships in real time. You will have opinions before you start. You might have different ones after.
