Swinging Safari

Stephan Elliott made The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert in 1994 with Guy Pearce. Swinging Safari is their first collaboration since, a semi-autobiographical comedy pulled from Elliott’s own 1970s coastal childhood. Kylie Minogue and Pearce play married neighbors whose suburban lives are quietly coming apart while their kids run feral on the beach. The original title was Flammable Children, which tells you more about the film’s sensibility than the final one does. Elliott reportedly called a crisis meeting on set over a sex scene. It holds a 75% on Rotten Tomatoes.

New York Confidential

New York Confidential

This is Anne Bancroft before anyone really knew who Anne Bancroft was. She’s 23 here, playing the daughter of a crime syndicate boss trying to stay clean while everyone around her is in the pocket of the mob. The Graduate is still 12 years away. Variety called her performance at the time “standout” and “showing continuing progress and talent.” The film is based on a 1948 tabloid expose by journalists Jack Lait and Lee Mortimer, which gives it a ripped-from-headlines weight that makes the noir feel grittier than the era usually allows.

The Beat Beneath My Feet

Nicholas Galitzine had no screen credits when he was cast as the lead. Director John Williams was also making his debut. Luke Perry was taking his first job in a low-budget British film, shot in South London in late 2013. A critic later wrote that Galitzine was “too conventionally attractive to convincingly play a socially isolated teenager,” which in hindsight lands as the funniest sentence ever written about a future star of The Idea of You. Perry plays the disgraced rock god hiding in the flat upstairs, and he’s genuinely funny in it.

Pelada

Ryan White went on to make The Case Against 8 for HBO and Good Night Oppy, earning a 2026 Academy Award nomination along the way. This is where he started. He and three Duke classmates took a $5,000 grant and spent a year finding pickup soccer games across 25 countries, premiering the result at SXSW 2010. What the film finds in a Bolivian prison yard and an Iranian women’s league says more about what the sport means to people than any broadcast ever has.

An Uncommon Grace

Kelly McGillis’s star-making role was an Amish widow in Peter Weir’s Witness (1985). Here she’s back in that world, same plain clothes and rural quiet, this time as the grandmother three decades further into the life. An Uncommon Grace is a Hallmark mystery with Jes Macallan as an army nurse investigating a murder in Amish country. McGillis is the reason to come for it. Macallan carries the weight.

Mountain Men

Mountain Men

Cameron Labine directed his actual brother Tyler in a film about two estranged brothers stuck at a remote mountain cabin, which gives their dynamic a texture you cannot fully fake. Chace Crawford plays the city sibling who made good and moved on, a deliberate play against his Gossip Girl type, while Tyler Labine does the heavier lifting as the one who never left. It’s a survival comedy that earns its sentiment.
