Green Room

Jeremy Saulnier's 2015 siege thriller stars Anton Yelchin as a broke punk band that stumbles into a murder at a neo-Nazi compound and spends the rest of the film trying to survive the night. Patrick Stewart plays the owner, a measured, soft-spoken white supremacist named Darcy who would prefer the situation handled quietly. It is not handled quietly. Lean and brutal, one of the better thrillers of the decade. This was among Yelchin's last films before his death in 2016.

A Man Called Ove

The Swedish original, before Tom Hanks made A Man Called Otto. Rolf Lassgård plays Ove, a rigid 59-year-old widower who has attended every neighborhood association meeting for decades and keeps attempting suicide between interruptions from his new neighbors. Nominated for two Academy Awards and adapted from Fredrik Backman's bestselling novel. It's one of those films where the grief and the humor are genuinely inseparable.

Sable

Ayla Kell plays the title character, squeezed between a mobster who thinks he owns her and an unstable boyfriend who has just killed someone. The window to act is one night. Directed by Michael Matteo Rossi, Sable is a crime thriller built around a single question: what does a person do when every option is bad and the least bad one requires nerve she isn't sure she has?

First Reformed

Paul Schrader wrote Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. First Reformed is the film he made four decades later that critics named one of the best of 2018. Ethan Hawke plays Reverend Ernst Toller, a pastor at a small historic Dutch Reformed church in upstate New York who begins counseling a woman whose husband has become consumed by climate despair. Shot in an austere 4:3 frame with very little music and even less comfort, it earns what it's after.

Supporting Our Selves

Supporting Our Selves

Lulu Wei's documentary traces the evolution of Toronto's queer communities through the Community One Foundation, a grant organization funding LGBTQ causes in Ontario since 1973. The film's argument is in the title: if the community doesn't support itself, no one else will. Released for Pride Month 2023, it functions as a practical history of how money moves within a community and who has decided where it goes.

Madonna: Making of an Icon

Madonna: Making of an Icon

A documentary tracing Madonna's trajectory from a Michigan childhood through years of grinding in New York to five decades of global reach. The film draws on cultural critics and music industry figures to contextualize the reinventions, the controversies, and the sheer endurance of a career that keeps outlasting the pronouncements that it's over. Whether the legacy has aged well is part of the conversation.
