Table No. 21

Table No. 21

A couple wins an all-expenses trip to Fiji, and things go well right up until their host explains the rules of a new game. The prize is real. So is the way you lose. Table No. 21 takes its name from Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, the one that guarantees the right to life, and spends the whole film asking what that right is actually worth when someone with money and a grudge decides it isn't. Paresh Rawal plays the host with a patience that gets more unsettling the longer the game runs.

Krantiveer

Krantiveer

Krantiveer is the movie that won Nana Patekar the National Film Award and the Filmfare Award for Best Actor in the same year, and once you see the monologue that closes it out, it's not hard to understand why. He plays a directionless alcoholic whose life turns around after he meets a fearless journalist willing to fight corruption in the open, and the film builds to a speech about human decay so blunt it's still quoted in India three decades later. Dimple Kapadia won Best Supporting Actress for the same film.

The Ambassador to Bern

The Ambassador to Bern

In 1958, two Hungarian refugees walked into their own country's embassy in Switzerland and took the staff hostage, hoping the rest of the world might finally notice what had happened after the 1956 revolution was crushed. The Ambassador to Bern restages that siege almost in real time, screening to acclaim at the Cairo International Film Festival for the way it turns a forgotten diplomatic standoff into something closer to a chamber thriller. Director Attila Szász keeps the whole thing contained to a handful of rooms, which only raises the tension.

Burt

A street musician with Parkinson's has his weekend upended by a young man from New York who shows up claiming to be his son. Burt was shot in seven days on a budget of seven thousand dollars, in black and white, and still walked away with the Copper Wing Award for Best Picture at the Phoenix Film Festival. Burt Berger, the man the film is named for and modeled on, plays a version of himself, and director Joe Burke, whose own father lives with Parkinson's, shoots the friendship at the center of it with more patience than sentiment.
