Janika Peay didn’t write a story about characters she invented. She wrote a story about people she knows, relationships she lived through, wounds that are still there. A Thin Line Between Love & Hurt is based on her book Lesbian Love Hurts, which tells her personal story of growing up as a lesbian in Baltimore and navigating the challenges, heartbreaks, and lessons that came with it.

The film is co-written by Peay and Eric Brown and directed by Ethan X Evans. Every major storyline comes from real situations and real people. The characters have different names. The emotions do not. “Pain doesn’t come from strangers as often as it comes from people we love,” Peay says. “That’s the story I wanted to tell.”

The Book First

The film has a predecessor: Peay’s book Lesbian Love Hurts, published before production began. Writing the book required sitting with the material. Making the film required revisiting it again. “The hardest part was reliving some of the experiences that inspired the story,” she says. “Writing and producing a film based on your own life requires you to revisit painful memories, difficult relationships, and emotional wounds.” Her goal was to remain honest while still creating something viewers could connect with on a universal level.

Why the Past Matters in the Present

The film includes younger versions of Janika and Kisha. Those scenes aren’t backstory; they’re the explanation. Where certain wounds began. Where fears took root. Where emotional patterns were first set. “Many of the decisions we make as adults are rooted in experiences from our childhood and young adulthood,” Peay says. Those earlier scenes are among the most personal in the film.

The Web of Relationships

Q, Joe, Khalidah, Nae, Mitch, Von, Michelle, Lady T. Each represents a relationship that shaped the story, drawn from Peay’s actual life. Names and details were changed for the telling. The emotions, conflicts, and dynamics were not. “I wanted the world to feel authentic because it reflects many of the people who helped shape my journey, both positively and negatively,” she says.

Recovery as Structure

Dr. Meyers represents the kind of difficult internal conversation that happens when you’re finally forced to confront pain rather than carry it. “I didn’t want to simply show the hurt,” Peay says. “I wanted to show the process of overcoming it.” The film isn’t pessimistic about love. It’s honest about what love alone can’t fix: healing, communication, accountability.

What to Know Before You Press Play

“This story comes from a real place,” Peay says. “It is inspired by true events, true emotions, and real people who impacted my life.” Her hope is that viewers will see pieces of themselves in the journey and walk away knowing that healing is possible, even after the most painful experiences.
