Movie Spotlight: From Swainsvegas to Las Vegas

Tony Alexander Brown Jr. drove solo from Georgia to Las Vegas with no script, no crew, and almost no one who knew where he was going -- just a sign, a camera, and a road he trusted.

Tony Alexander Brown Jr. drove from Swainsboro, Georgia to Las Vegas, Nevada alone. No script, no crew, no itinerary. He told his mom about the Nashville stop. That was it. Nobody else knew where he was headed, and that was the whole point.

Brown makes music under the name Proper Einstein. From Swainsvegas to Las Vegas grew out of a sidewalk conversation -- a man stopped beside him while he was holding a “Jesus” sign in Swainsboro, showed him photos of years spent traveling the country as a street preacher, and planted a seed. The title pairs the local nickname for Swainsboro (used by college students and the racecar crowd) with the destination God put on his heart. It was always going to stand out.

The road with no plan

Brown put Las Vegas into Google Maps, got three route options, and picked the one that took him through places he’d never been. After that, he had no plan. “I felt that I was led to each place,” he says, “because everywhere that I went, something interesting happened.” His only intention was to share the gospel. Everything else, he trusted would follow from that. It did.

Robert, Larry, and the consent question

He met Robert outside a McDonald’s in Denver -- saw him from the wrong side of traffic, kept driving, then got routed back past him. This time on the right side of the road, Brown pulled over, gave a donation, shared a Bible verse. “I can tell that he had faith by the way he responded.” He asked if Robert had a testimony and would share it on camera. Robert said sure. Larry walked by later the same day while Brown was recording a segment, came back after Brown finished, and asked what a man with a Georgia plate was doing in Colorado. Brown explained. Larry agreed to share his testimony too. The pattern held throughout: the Lord led him to the people, and he asked for consent as confirmation.

Why nobody could know

Brown was deliberate about the secrecy. He didn’t want anyone saying “be careful” or “what if something happens?” -- not because he was reckless, but because he was solely depending on the Lord and didn’t want doubt introduced from outside. “It had to be 100 percent honest,” he says. “I had to be honest with myself also and that translated into the film.” Nashville was the first stop. After that interview -- one he hadn’t expected -- he started preparing for anything possible. That was when he knew the journey was truly meant to be captured.

Proper Einstein and the mountain

On the return trip through Albuquerque, Brown saw a mountain surrounded by clouds and knew he had to stop. He shot a music video at the walking trail at the base -- introducing his artist persona, Proper Einstein, which he’d spoken about at the film’s opening. Without that segment, the film would have run under 40 minutes. “It was a creative decision to include it,” he says, though the setup sounds like the rest of the trip: the mountain was there, it was majestic, and he was led to it.

What to know before you press play

Brown is clear about what From Swainsvegas to Las Vegas is and isn’t. “This is not a ‘typical’ documentary,” he says. “It’s more like a journey that was documented.” The film wasn’t made to preach at anyone -- it was made to relate and motivate. A Black musician took a solo road trip on faith and came back with a film about it and the God he trusted. “It came together that way through the help of the Lord.”
