The turning point wasn't when things got better. It was earlier than that. It was the moment Rolanda cried out and discovered she was heard.
Rolanda wrote He Heard My Cry with her sister Ida Shoulders. It is based on her life. The film follows a woman through losses, betrayal, poverty, and abuse, through moments that pushed her to the edge, toward a spiritual encounter she wasn't looking for and wasn't prepared for. Directed by Richard and Lauren Polite, with Diamond Quirsten playing Rolanda, the film is set in McKinney, Texas, where Rolanda has lived for the past twenty years of her transformation.
The Pain Had to Stay
Rolanda was deliberate about not softening the first act. "I never wanted to sanitize the struggle to make the transformation feel more dramatic. The pain had to feel real because it was real." The film asks the audience to sit in uncomfortable places long enough to understand what hopelessness actually feels like. The faith that emerges later isn't announced. It comes through one decision, one relationship, one encounter at a time.
"It's tough trying to show people God loves them in media when content fails to show the real life complexities that come with being human," Rolanda says. "If people can't see themselves there, how can they relate?"
The Woman You Meet at the Start
Rolanda wanted the audience to meet a woman they might overlook. Someone carrying trauma, making mistakes, trying to survive, searching for love and identity in places that couldn't sustain her. "By the end, I didn't want viewers to see perfection. I wanted them to see freedom, healing, and purpose. Her transformation is not becoming someone else; it's finally becoming who she was always created to be."
The ensemble around Rolanda includes Craig (De'Tuan Williams), Pastor Chris (Theo Bray), Jeremiah (Abe Lopez), and Young Rolanda, along with characters named Ida, Roland, Teresa, Tracy, Britt, Grandma Sarah, Sylvia, and Eric. Rolanda sees each one as representing something real. "Some characters open doors, some create wounds, and some become mirrors."
McKinney, Texas
The story's darker chapters happened in California. Rolanda grew up there in poverty, and it's where the losses and betrayal played out. After her spiritual turning point, she moved to McKinney, Texas, where the rebuild took hold: ordained minister, homeowner, nonprofit executive, community leader, over 25 years at the same employer. The film was shot in McKinney because that's where the relationships were. Business owners, friends, and community members who had watched the transformation happen opened their doors at no cost or close to it.
"These places carry memories, relationships, and chapters of the journey," she says. "Filming locally also reflected something important to me: that extraordinary transformation can happen in ordinary places."
Two Sisters, One Story
Writing with Ida Shoulders meant writing together about experiences both of them lived through. "My sister Ida and I writing our story together helped protect both honesty and heart," Rolanda says. "We carried a responsibility to tell the truth without turning pain into entertainment." Every decision came back to the same question: does this feel emotionally honest? The goal wasn't sympathy. It was recognition. "We wanted to help people see themselves in Rolanda."
What to Know Before You Press Play
Rolanda's ask is simple: come as you are. "This isn't a story about having perfect faith, or in my case no faith at all to start. It's about what can happen when someone reaches the end of themselves and discovers they are still seen, still loved, and still worth rescuing. If you've ever wondered whether your story could become something different, this film is for you."
