Cornelia de Santis is a famous environmental influencer. On live television, she posts her real phone number. What follows is one night. The title translates directly: it happens in one night.

Director Emiliano Canova co-wrote Succede in Una Notte with Jessica Beltramello, who also edited and produced the film. They set it in Rieti, Italy, with local municipal support and a cast that includes real inhabitants of the area alongside professional actors. “Sometimes the most honest cinema is the kind made with less, and with more heart,” Canova says. The film operates inside that logic.

The Phone Number as a Pressure Cooker

The public phone number is not just a plot device. It is, as Canova describes it, the physical bridge that connects social spheres that would otherwise never cross. A high-profile influencer, ordinary workers, and marginalized figures who move through the city at night. One phone number makes them all collide. “The single-night structure acts as a narrative pressure cooker. In just a few hours, characters cannot hide behind their usual daily routines or filters; the ticking clock strips away their defenses.”

Neither Comedy nor Thriller, Exactly

The film was designed not to be just one thing. Canova describes it as a psychological drama with dark undertones that flirts with danger and tragedy while holding onto a search for human redemption. The tone shifts because a real crisis is unpredictable. “The film intentionally avoids being just one thing, chasing instead a tense, realistic psychological drama with dark undertones.”

Rita Rusciano plays Cornelia. The relationship that unlocked the entire story, Canova says, was the dynamic between Cornelia and her online haters. The thin line between public adoration and anonymous vitriol. That dynamic became the emotional anchor for the rest of the ensemble.

Rieti as a Character

The choice to film in Rieti rather than a major Italian city says something about what the film is doing. “Being filmed in Rieti with local municipal backing heavily grounded the movie. Translating global digital issues into a provincial Italian urban setting shows that modern technological alienation affects local, tight-knit European realities just as much as big global metropolises.” Local actors and real inhabitants of the area appear alongside the professional cast. The audience feels it, Canova says, even if they cannot quite explain why.

Jessica Beltramello’s Role

Co-screenwriter Beltramello brought a dual perspective: she also served as editor and producer. Canova credits her specifically with writing psychology from a female perspective, which shaped the narrative world and the balance between psychological depth and visual rhythm.

What to Know Before You Press Play

The film is about what our digital behaviors cost us in the real world. Canova wants viewers to know that Succede in Una Notte is an intense psychological journey. It does not offer easy escapes. “It forces us to look closely at the real-world consequences of our digital behaviors and the human lives behind the screens.”
