Series Spotlight: For the Love of Comedy

Six Atlanta comedians, two episodes, one subject: love and relationships, from every angle. Plus a real proposal at the end.

The title means two things at once. It's about comedians who love what they do, and it's about love itself, the romantic kind, the messy kind, the kind you get five years into a marriage when it's still funny but differently funny. For the Love of Comedy is a two-episode standup series built around Atlanta comics talking about relationships, and the combination of real relationship experience with sharp comedic instinct turns out to be a good one.

Produced by Make Me Laugh Media, the series puts six comedians in front of a live audience and lets the material speak. The first episode features Ronnie Jordan and Shack DD, who are married, alongside D. Furg, who is in a committed relationship. The second brings in host Hank Denson, Fattman Deezy, and Andromeda Jones, each at different stages in their love lives. Different perspectives, same subject, across both episodes.

What the casting was actually about

The lineup wasn't put together for variety's sake. It was deliberate. "The first episode features comedians who are in relationships," says Rod Rose, "and the fact that they're in relationships makes it that much more funny." There's something to that: comedians married or committed to someone can talk about the cautionary side of love in a way that lands differently than theory. The second episode widens the lens, with Denson, Deezy, and Jones offering takes from wherever they currently are in life. Broad scope, the whole spectrum.

Atlanta

Every comedian in the series came up in the Atlanta scene, even if not born there. "They've all made a name for themselves in Atlanta," Rod Rose says, "and we couldn't be more proud of them or the city." The energy that Atlanta comedy rooms produce is part of what makes the material feel live. If the energy in the room is right, the comedians feel it, and that translates on screen.

The surprise at the end

There's a proposal at the end of the series. A real one. Getting it to work on camera took effort. "We hope that translates and puts good energy into the world," says Rod Rose. It's the kind of moment that fits what the series is going for: comedy about love that doesn't flinch from the fact that love is actually something.

What to know before you press play

Rod Rose says it plainly: "It's filled with laughs and love and with that combination you can't go wrong." This is clean comedy, built for people who want to watch something with someone they like. The comics are candid, the material is earned, and the vulnerability comedians bring when they actually open up about their relationships tends to be the funniest stuff they have. For the Love of Comedy counts on that being true. It is.
